PE Coated Paper

PE coated paper / (Single Side Laminated Paper )is a paper that is coated with PE or polyethylene. Polyethylene (or polythene) is the name of the most widely used plastic around the globe. The reason for coating any paper, with a compound (in this case polyethylene), is to impart some desirable qualities, of the latter, to the former.

Polyethylene basically has a very high resistance to chemicals and does not dissolve at room temperature. Another great property of this plastic, which is also responsible for its high demand, is its resistance to water. However, a major reason, why despite these qualities its use is facing opposition is the fact that plastics take several centuries to de-grade; unless exposed to UV-rays.

PE coated paper has thus been an answer to the requirement of these qualities in the packaging industry; addressing the environmental issues, alongside. PE coating not only renders the paper water resistance, but confers it wet strength as well. The latter here refers to the strength with which the fibre-web of paper holds together, against a force of rupture.  

A Pe coated paper is made by a process known as extrusion coating. In this process, a coating of plastic, in its molten state, is extruded onto the paper; through a slit dye, at temperature touching 320˚C. Following this, it passes through a nip, holding a rubber-covered pressure roller. Finally, a trip through the chrome-plated cooling roll, cools it back into solid state, and imparts the plastic surface, the desired finish.

PE Coated Triplex Board

The demand of the pe coated paper is majorly witnessed throughout the packaging industry. This pe coated paper may be bleached pe coated paper; pe coated silk paper; or natural coated triplex  boards. This Paper is used in manufacturing of Paper Cups and Tubes of high quality.

The bleached PE coated paper finds its uses in the food and pharmaceutical field; for wrapping/packaging of meat, cheese, pastries, cakes, butter, sugar, spices as well as for powdered medicines. The silk paper is mainly used in the textile industry for wrapping fabrics.  The unbleached or natural coated paper is used in construction as well as paper and wood processing industries; for wrapping/packing of timber, construction supplies, paper reams etc.

The pe coated paper may be single PE coated or double PE coated. As in the case of paper cups, the hot ones are coated only on the inside, i.e. single PE coated. The hot ones, on the other hand are coated on both the inside as well as outside. This is so as to prevent the condensed moisture from soaking in; which might make the cup lose its rigidity and become soggy. This PE coat not only water-proofs the cup, but also allows the seams to weld together.

Owing to their property to the keep the inside (and outside) moisture and flavor inside (and outside); these pe coated papers are also widely used in the liquid packaging industry. Juices, milks and a number of other beverages are packaged in cartons made of this material. They find other uses as inner lining of cartons, heat sealable wrappers or labels etc also.
